Esoteric is defined as, ‘intended or likely to be understood by only a small number of people with a specialist knowledge or interest’. However, it is really quite a large constituency and involves a number of historical and philosophical traditions. Some of these include Western occultism and Eastern religions. Other involve personal, so-called transformatory work. There is something of all of these in the various writings here; in particular, the Fourth Way, Gurdjieff, J G Bennett, P D Ouspensky, Alchemy, Sufism, Gnosis and Gnosticism, and ideas from the teaching of Ramana Maharshi. These are variously approached in terms of history, psychology, social context and personal growth and development.
